Top 10 places to visit: Guide to Cancun
1. Playa Delfines
Playa Delfines is one of the most visited beaches by locals. Located near the hotel zone, at kilometer 19.5, it is one of the largest free beaches in the area. Without hotels at their backs, you can rest for a while the view of the large white buildings and take long walks without avoiding white hammocks. There’s no doubt why Playa Delfines is number in our Guide to Cancun.
If your thing is to play with the waves, the beach will fit you, otherwise, the bath can be a bit uncomfortable due to the wave that you have to form. The truth is that it is a great beach to spend the day and you can get from the center of Cancun on the bus line R1 or R2, which run throughout the hotel zone.
2. Laguna Nichupté
The main attraction of the lagoon, besides the boat trips and some other tourist activities that you can do, is its mangroves. These mangroves and their ecosystems are vital and are responsible for protecting the coasts from the erosion and wear caused by storms and hurricanes. In addition, the Nichupté lagoon pools four types of mangroves that are the refuge and home of a lot of wild species, such as crocodiles, leopard frogs, iguanas and white turtles.
3. Mercado 28
If you are interested in the typical crafts of the region, our number three in our Guide to Cancun: Mercado 28 is one of the things you have to do in Cancun. Stroll through their stalls, get lost in the crowded alleys, eat some tacos while music plays and fill your backpack with memories for your loved ones. If you know how to choose, there are handmade crafts of very good taste, which are always a better memory and much more representative than the plastic keychain or magnet with the letters Cancun engraved in it.
4. Plaza de las Palapas
One of the favorite meeting places for locals at the weekend. There is no shortage of families and couples who will spend time at the plaza on the weekend, have lunch at the little shops and sometimes even enjoy some of the shows that can be seen on the stage.
5. Punta Cancún Lighthouse
A good place to spend the day, to enjoy with the couple or to take out the camera and put into practice all your creativity with photography.
Punta Cancún Lighthouse is located at kilometer 10 of the Hotel Zone. To access it you have to take the R1 or R2 and get off at km 10. You have to enter Chac Mool beach and walk to the right.
6. Excursion to Isla Mujeres
Barely 8km long, this island is perfect for cycling, and you can quickly get from one side to the other, from one beach to the next, from north to south. An exceptional place to visit for a couple of days and enjoy its beaches of turquoise water and clear sand, quieter than those of its neighboring Cancun. In addition, along its coasts are beautiful reefs that if you dare, you can scuba dive.
7. Escape to Puerto Morelos
In Puerto Morelos, you can still enjoy the atmosphere of a fishing village. You can still see the fishermen fixing the nets or painting the small boats and the beaches, although perhaps not as spectacular as those of Tulum or Cancun.
If diving is your thing, in Puerto Morelos you will find a paradise, because only 500 meters from its beach, is the second largest reef in the world, after Australia.
From Cancun and in the direction to Puerto Morelos, there are a plenty of cenotes that you can take advantage of to visit. Among the most popular are Boca del Puma, the so-called Lucero Verde, Siete Bocas or Mojarras.
The impressive ruins of the ancient Mayan city built on the shores of the Caribbean are quite well preserved and truly impressive, as well as being the only Mayan city located by the sea. The beaches of Tulum are also a delight and its cenotes offer an activity to change the day.
10. If you like to party…
Last but not least in our Guide to Cancun, it’s its nightlife. If you want a party, you can stay in Cancun and go to kilometer 9.5 of the Hotel Zone, where you will find a handful of establishments and nightclubs that offer night parties and nightly shows. Some charge entry and others simply are forced to consume to enter, that will depend on the level of the show they offer.
